Abstract:
Titanium dental implants are widely used in oral rehabilitation, but metallic particles may be released into the peri-implant environment over time through wear, corrosion or tribocorrosion. The minimally invasive detection of this debris and its relationship with peri-implant inflammatory features remain insufficiently standardized. The aim of CYTOMETAL project is to define a reproducible cytological and microscopy-based workflow for monitoring metallic debris in peri-implant oral samples from adults with titanium dental implants. This project involves the collection of peri-implant samples using swab procedures, followed by preparation of treated slides for microscopic inspection. Unstained samples will be examined by multimodal light microscopy, including reflected, transmitted and polarized light. Samples will then be stained with BlueStain® to assess cellular morphology and inflammatory features. Selected samples will be confirmed by TEM-EDS, allowing ultrastructural and elemental validation. The results are promising to consider the potential use of this workflow for early monitoring of peri-implant tissue response and future clinical studies.
