Abstract:

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic metabolic disease caused by the body failure to produce the hormone insulin. The resulting hyperglycemic state causes health-damaging chronic systemic inflammation. Periodontal disease (PD) is a similar chronic inflammatory disease with a multifactorial etiology. The early diagnosis of PD on patients with T1DM is a critical clinical goal to reduce the damage that a hyperglycemic state can cause on systemic patient health. The relationship of diseases has already shown that PD potentiates the chronic inflammation that occurs during diabetes. In this project, we propose to create the first national study of the prevalence of PD in T1DM patients. In order to achieve this objective, we will start with the description of predominant medical and social parameters for this patient and describe the typical periodontal status for them. This study will work on other specific objectives that will help us to determine the special characteristics of this disease association. We will  investigate the specific profile of the inflammatory response and the oral microbiome on diabetic patient with PD (test group) and without PD (control) diagnosis.
