Elizabeth Tiritan

Maria Elizabeth Tiritan is currently the leader of the Drug Research line at IINFACTS and Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Faculty of Pharmacy of Porto University. She took a Degree in Chemistry (Federal University of São Carlos-Brazil in 1989), got a PhD in Organic Chemistry (1996), from the same University, through collaboration with the University of Warwick-UK. She has been also a Post-doc fellow at Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Porto in 1997/2000 and integrated member of the CEQUIMED-UP (Medicinal Chemistry Centre - Porto University), from 1997 to 2014 and CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research) from 2015-2017. She became a Group Leader of the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Group Sciences of the Health Sciences Research Center at CESPU from 2007 to 2012 and the Coordinator of Environmental Research Unit of the IINFACTS from 2013 to 2017. One of the main streams of her research concerns the development and diagnose of environmental safe drugs and policies that promote the use of greener drugs over similar compounds that are less environmentally friendly. She was part of the pioneering team start enantioselective biodegradation studies of chiral pharmaceuticals and quantification of enantiomers in environmental matrices. Her current interests in research include exploiting new analytical method to quantify and identify metabolite in biodegradation studies of chiral drugs in environmental matrices. In parallel with the collaboration with the Faculty of Pharmacy of Porto University she has been working in development of new chiral bioactive compounds for diverse biological activities screening, including potential antitumor, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agents. The chiral bioactive compounds have also been exploited as selectors for enantiomeric separation by liquid chromatography. She has been a nuclear research in a project financed by FCT in collaboration with ESB-UCP, member of several projects founded by FCT, Bilateral Cooperation and Principal Investigation of several projects support by CESPU. She and has h-index 27 and (Scopus Author ID: 6602890981). She is team member of 4 currently active projects funded (1 from FCT, and 3 from CESPU). He acts as reviewer in many journals in the field and in international fellowship and grant application Evaluation Committees, including referee of the ERC Starting Grant.
